Why I Use AI
And why AI is good for me!
I read so much about people having a go at people writing with AI and I’m putting my hand 🤚 up! It’s not that AI writes for me. It removes the barrier that kept my voice hidden. I still write it, I tell it what I want it to say, I proof read it and make changes it it’s not saying what I want it to say.
Why do I use it?
Growing up, from the time I started Prep at 5 until I left school, I attended 13 different schools. Every school taught things differently, and I never had the chance to build a solid foundation.
I left school at 14.
Why?
My mum was a single parent. There was no child support, or if there was, we certainly weren’t receiving it. Child endowment was about $28 a month. I left school to work in a clothing factory sewing clothes. I earned $78 a week.
I didn’t leave because I wanted to. I left because my mum needed help paying the rent and putting food on the table.
Years later, as an adult volunteering on a committee, someone criticised the grammar in the meeting minutes I had written. It was a small comment, but it stayed with me. From that day on, I lost confidence in my writing and even in speaking in public.
So now, when I write, I write exactly what I want to say first. Then paste in chat and I ask ChatGPT to help me express it more clearly.
I tell it, “This is what I want to say. This is my tone. This is what I’m trying to share.”
It doesn’t write my stories for me. They are still my stories, my experiences and my words. It simply helps me say them in a way that gives me the confidence to press “Post”.
I’m not lazy.
I’m not too busy to write for myself.
I simply live with the FEAR of posting something I’ve written and using “to” instead of “too”, or “bought” instead of “brought”, and being judged for it and i’m now 62. I think it’s stopped me long enough.
If using AI to help me communicate offends some people, I’m sorry. But without it, I probably wouldn’t write at all. That would mean I wouldn’t get to share my farm, my animals, or the little moments that might make someone smile, feel connected, or simply have a better day.
For me, AI hasn’t replaced my voice.
It’s helped me find the confidence to use it.
